Marvella E. Ford, PhD
Location: Bioengineering Building 103A
Dr. Ford is a Professor of Public Health Sciences. In her role at Hollings Cancer Center, Dr. Ford oversees the effort to address our state’s critical cancer disparities through community outreach and education. Dr. Ford and her team are working with minority leaders throughout the state to build bi-directional, trusting, and long-lasting partnerships. The establishment of these partnerships now plays a critical role in the ability of Hollings Cancer Center investigators to tailor culturally and contextually knowledgeable interventions and implement them in communities that previously did not welcome clinical research.
Also, Dr. Ford works closely with the other members of the Cancer Center's senior leadership to encourage the inclusion of a minority focus in programmatic research efforts and to facilitate connections to community partners, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), when appropriate. A second approach that Dr. Ford has employed is developing new initiatives for professional education among minorities. She has successfully established relationships between the Hollings Cancer Center and several HBCUs and is building on these to provide undergraduate minority students with the educational opportunities to explore biomedical career options at this institution.
