Research Interest:
Role of oxidative stress in cancer initiation. Prdx 1-deficient mice have higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and die prematurely of multiple cancers. My current research aims focus on the role of Prdx1 as a tumor suppressor. Prdx1 scavenges peroxides in the cell. That way it is reducing ROS, which cause severe cellular damage, if the levels are too high, resulting in diseases such as cancer. Since elderly individuals have higher levels of ROS and are more prone to cancer than younger individuals, studying the tumor suppressive function fo Prdx1 will help to develop cancer preventive strategies in humans.
