Celebrated Chef Norman Van Aken to Headline Gourmet & Grapes Culinary Event
at Kiawah Island Golf Resort Benefiting Hollings Cancer Center
Third Annual Fundraiser to Feature Golf with Pros, Seminars with Chefs and Wine Experts and a Gala on the Atlantic
January 12, 2011, Kiawah Island, SC — The Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina and Kiawah Island Golf Resort are pleased to announce that renowned Chef Norman Van Aken will headline the third annual Gourmet & Grapes fundraiser for cancer research. Gourmet & Grapes, one of Charleston’s most unique charity events, will take place April 29th – May 1st at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
The event raises money for the Hollings Cancer Center, South Carolina’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
Van Aken is known internationally as “the founding father of New World Cuisine,” a celebration of Latin, Caribbean, Asian, African, and American flavor and is also known for introducing the concept of “fusion” to the culinary world.
"I am honored and delighted to join in the tradition of my colleagues Chefs Charlie Trotter and Patrick O' Connell to come and cook at The Sanctuary, Kiawah Island for Gourmet and Grapes,” Van Aken said. “I have loved this amazing region of our country for a near lifetime and to be able to share my take on American Cuisine is uplifting. Combining that with raising money to fight cancer is humbling.”
Van Aken is the only Floridian on the coveted James Beard list of “Who’s Who in American Food and Beverage,” and he is a recipient of the James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef in the Southeast honors. He is a member of the prestigious James Beard Advisory Board.
The weekend event will feature leading chefs from the southeastern US (to be announced soon) and international food and wine experts Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen, also known as the World Wine Guys. Articles and commentary by DeSimone and Jenssen have appeared in Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, Saveur.com, Sherman’s Travel, International Living, and The European. They are monthly columnists for Wine Enthusiast, and are the magazine’s “Entertaining Gurus.”
“Wine is one of life’s greatest pleasures and we like to make it fun and non-intimidating. That’s why we are thrilled to be part of this year’s Gourmet and Grapes,” DeSimone and Jenssen said. “The next time the waiter hands you a wine list, we hope you will feel like the competent adult you are, and not a like second-grader trying to avoid a dodge-ball."
