The Point Is Gift
MUSC HOLLINGS CANCER CENTER RECEIVES $12,000 FROM NONPROFIT THE POINT IS TO SUPPORT BREAST CANCER PROGRAMS FOR UNDERSERVED WOMEN May 23, 2011, CHARLESTON, SC – The Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is pleased to announce a $12,000 gift from Charleston-area nonprofit The Point Is to support breast cancer screening and diagnostic testing, early detection and prevention education on the cancer center’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU). The aim of the gift is to underwrite programs for underserved women who are at high risk for breast cancer. “We believe most women could be served by what Hollings offers. One of our own members has been treated there, and we saw the level of care she received,” said Becky Stallworth, president of The Point Is. “With our gift, we hope to pass that on to as many Lowcountry women as possible.” Since 1998, the MHU has provided screening, education and counseling to more than 13,000 people. The MHU, equipped with state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment, is the only full- service mobile cancer screening site in the state. The mission of the unit is to reach adults (18 and older) living in rural or underserved areas. The MHU also screens for prostate, skin, cervical, and oral cancers. “On behalf of the staff of the Comprehensive Breast Care Program at Hollings, we are sincerely grateful for this generous gift to Lowcountry women,” said Megan Baker, MD, director of the Comprehensive Breast Care Program. “Regardless of means, all women deserve access to the best level of screening we have to offer.” Founded in 2007 on Johns Island, The Point Is has donated to a number of local nonprofits such as Simply Divine Gardens, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, My Sister’s House, and more. The organization seeks to enhance quality of life for women in the Lowcountry.
