agnew@musc.edu For Immediate Release Hollings Cancer Center Creates $1 Million Endowed Chair for Breast Cancer Research and Treatment with Gift from the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation Charleston, SC, (Oct. 2, 2007) – The Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center has received $500,000 from the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation to create the Countess Alicia Paolozzi Distinguished Endowed Chair in Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment and Research. Hollings Cancer Center will provide matching funds of $500,000 for the endowed chair. “The $1 million Chair will allow Hollings Cancer Center to recruit an outstanding breast cancer clinician and scientist to find new ways of diagnosing and treating the disease,” said Andrew S. Kraft, M.D., Director of Hollings Cancer Center. “Great strides have been made in diagnosing and treating breast cancer, but we have a long way to go. A gift like this from the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation enables us to continue our mission of preventing, detecting and treating breast cancer in South Carolina.” The purpose of this Chair is to leverage the considerable research capabilities of MUSC and Hollings Cancer Center in the following ways: · To better understand the origins of breast cancer · To develop preventative strategies for breast cancer through molecular diagnostics · To lead the effort to promote minority breast health through collaborative work with the Hollings Cancer Center Disparities programs · To bring cutting edge novel treatments to the people of South Carolina · To provide exceptional patient care and clinical leadership to all the physicians of South Carolina “On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation, we are thrilled to support the incredible work of the Hollings Cancer Center,” said Nigel Redden, President of the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation. “We had absolutely no hesitation in making this contribution and are proud to help.” The Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation was founded by Countess Alicia Paolozzi to support efforts concerning the environment, the sustainability of agriculture, and issues involving women and the elderly.
