2007 Hollings Annual Report Highlights
Every day at the Hollings Cancer Center, a dedicated team of doctors, scientists, and specialists focuses their energy and commitment on a singular goal: Bringing hope to the thousands of South Carolinians who are diagnosed with cancer every year. And as we have consistently done since being established in 1993, HCC continues to build upon our efforts to be the leading institution in the region – and among the best in the nation – for cancer care, treatment, research, and education. We have created the infrastructure necessary to provide leading-edge, state-of-the future resources. The work being done in our labs is expanding the knowledge of how cancer functions, leading to more innovative therapies. And we are attracting internationally known specialists and some of the country’s best young minds. Our successes in 2007 more than reflect these achievements. We earned a prestigious grant from the State to establish a Center of Economic Excellence for Tobacco-Related Malignancies, which are South Carolina’s leading cause of cancer death. It will support two endowed chairs, enabling us to recruit high-profile researchers to HCC and provide them a collaborative, supportive environment to search for and validate new molecular indicators for cancer. In doing so, it will help us make an even greater difference in the lives of patients and their families statewide.
