One of the best ways to disseminate accurate information about cancer -- from prevention and screening through diagnosis and treatment -- is to empower people to carry the messages into their communities. That's why the Hollings Cancer Center has partnered with the South Carolina Cancer Alliance (SCCA). Hollings and the SCCA have developed a program called Train the Trainer, a series of education seminars held in medically underserved communities throughout South Carolina that teach local leaders, health professionals and advocates how to talk with others about cancer prevention, screening and early detection. The seminars are funded by AT&T. The training modules focus on cancer myths; the top ten types of cancer death in South Carolina; cancer causes and risks; cancer prevention and early detection; screening guidelines for breast, cervical, skin, colorectal, and prostate cancer; and cancer resources. Particular attention is given to the importance of participation in cancer clinical trials.
